1. There was a blackout last night, so we studied by candlelight.
There be句型的过去式，表示过去存在或者发生某事，a blackout指的是“停电”，注意这里的blackout是名词，前面可以加上冠词a，last night昨晚，There was a blackout last night, 昨晚停电了。很多朋友应该都有过在上学期间晚自习时停电的经历，我就记得班长曾经为班上同学临时买来蜡烛，这样呢我们就可以studiy by candlelight通过烛光来学习。There was a blackout last night, so we studied by candlelight. 昨晚停电了,所以我们点蜡烛学习。再来听一句：Will there be another blackout tomorrow? 明天会再来一次停电吗?
2. The firm is in the black for 3 years.
In the black指财政黑字，也就是收入大于支出，账目表上通常用黑色字体来记录盈利，所以呢“盈利，盈余”叫做in the black；那么与之相对的“负债”则是用红字记录的，因此叫做in the red或者in debt，也就是财政赤字，收入小于支出。The firm is in the black for 3 years. 这家公司三年来一直盈利。He moved the company into the black. 他让公司扭亏为盈。 I am in the red this month again . 啊，这个月我又透支了。

3. It's all there in black and white.
It's all there 指“一切都在这里了”，很有画面感，让人想到好像有人理直气壮地指着一堆东西，说你想看的都在这里，似乎给人一种证据确凿的感觉。我们可以想象到面前应该是有一堆字据，白纸黑字，这就是in black and white. It's all there in black and white. 有白纸黑字为证。再来听一个例句：I'll put everything in black and white! 我会把所有事情白纸黑字写清楚。
