IAN: After lunch. Could you come about two o'clock?
GREG: O.K.
IAN: And would you mind bringing your ladder?I need two ladders, so would you bring yours please?
GREG: I'm afraid I can't, Ian.
IAN: Oh?
GREG: No. The ladder's broken, I'm afraid.
IAN: Oh...well...I'll use a chair.
GREG: O.K. I'll see you about two o'clock.
IAN: Thanks, Greg. See you．

1．请某人做某事

注意：
Sure，0.K.和All right这三种说法比较随便，Certainly比较正式。
2．请某人不做某事
Would you mind not doing that?
Please don't do that．
肯定答复（如果有人要求我们不做某事，我们通常总是同意的。）
0.K．
All right.
Sure!
Certainly.
3．请求允许做某事
a) Can I come in?
Could I use your phone?
May I sit here?
表示允许
Sure．
Of course．
Certainly.
b) Do you mind if I smoke?
表示允许
Of course not．
在回答(a)和(b)的问题时，如果表示不允许，可以说：I'd rather you didn't.
注意：
Could I...比Can I...把握更小一些。
Do you mind if...这种说法比较客气。
请求别人允许做某事，通常是要很客气的。如果要做的事，比如吸烟，可能使人感到不快，问的时候尤其要客气。
如果你觉得你要问的问题不大好问，或可能使人感到尴尬，就可以先说Do you mind if I ask a question?
I'd rather you didn't这个说法可能显得有点怪，不过你大概记得第4讲里说过I'd rather=I'd prefer。至于didn't，它不表示过去的动作，这里用的是虚拟语气。

CONVERSATIONAL DEVICES

a) Look! 意思相当于listen to what I have to say，或What I mean is...
b) I see意思是“我明白了”，可在会话中用作答话。

你将在广播里听到两支歌曲，一支是Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends, 一支是Don't Make Me Laugh。
