On May 6 2019, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the "IPCC of biodiversity", unveiled at UNESCO Headquarters the first intergovernmental global assessment report on biodiversity.
This landmark report reminds us of the urgent need to act together for biodiversity, for future generations.
Biodiversity is the living fabric of our planet. Its depletion jeopardizes nature's vital contributions to humanity, endangering economies, livelihoods, food security, health, cultural diversity and quality of life, and constitutes a major threat to global peace and security.
Human activities are to a great extent responsible for this erosion. It is therefore essential that we change our outlook and change our behaviour regarding biodiversity.
We already have the scientific knowledge necessary for this transformation. We can also draw on indigenous and local practices and knowledge that are valuable sources of solutions.
The celebration of this international day in 2019 is intended to highlight the essential contribution of our planet's biodiversity to human health, and in particular to food. UNESCO will mark the day by promoting the practices and knowledge of networks of sites committed to sustainable development, such as the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, world heritage sites and the Global Geoparks Network. By paying tribute to knowledge and skills that respect biodiversity, we aim to promote positive interactions between cultures and nature, humans and other species in the living world.
