A renowned Chinese philosophy professor has been put under probe after he was caught smoking during a lecture in the southern city of Shenzhen.
某知名中国哲学教授因被发现在中国南部深圳市参加讲座时吸烟而受到调查。
The Shenzhen Health Commission said in a statement on Tuesday that the professor, Wang Defeng, was invited to give a lecture on June 9. In a video that circulated widely on social media, Wang is seen smoking while giving the lecture, and the host hands him cigarettes even though the premise is a non-smoking area.
深圳卫健委在10月10日发表声明称，教授王德峰应邀于6月9日参加了一场讲座。相关视频在社交媒体上广泛传播。视频显示，举行讲座的场所是无烟区域，王教授边抽烟边讲话，主持人还帮忙递烟。
The Shenzhen Health Commission said it conducted an investigation into the matter and found that the organizer of the lecture, Shenzhen Huadonghui Culture Development Co, failed to promptly stop Wang's behavior. The organizer was given a warning.
深圳卫健委表示已对此事展开调查。卫健委认为，讲座主办方深圳市华董汇文化发展有限公司未能及时制止王教授的行为，向该公司发出警告。
The commission also said that an investigation into Wang himself is ongoing.
同时，卫健委表示正在对王教授本人采取进一步调查。
Wang is a retired philosophy professor from Fudan University in Shanghai. He is known for his witty and humorous speaking style, as well as his habit of smoking during lectures.
王德峰是上海市复旦大学哲学系的退休教授，因讲话风趣幽默、酷似脱口秀，以及上课抽烟的习惯而出名。
This was not the first time Wang received punishments for smoking in non-smoking areas. In September 2022, Wang was fined 3,500 yuan ($500) for smoking in a non-smoking area in Shanghai.
这并非王教授第一次因在无烟区域吸烟而受到处罚。2022年9月，王教授因在上海某无烟区域吸烟被罚款3500元（约合500美元）。
Li Enze, an official with the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control Association, said that Wang's behavior had set a bad example for teenagers. He expressed hope that Wang would refrain from smoking in indoor public places.
中国控制吸烟协会官员李恩泽认为，王教授的行为对青少年形成了不良示范效应。他希望王教授今后能够避免在室内公共场所吸烟。
