Can you clarify the meaning of “award” and “reward?”

“Award” and “reward” have similar meanings.

award和reward有相似的意思。

They both can be different parts of speech - nouns and verbs.

它们都有不同的词性,可作名词和动词。

They are something you get for your behavior, but there are major differences.

这两个词都表示你因为自己的行为而得到的东西,但二者有很大的不同。

Let’s look more deeply at each word.

让我们更深入地看看每个单词。

“An award” is a noun.

award是名词。

It is something valuable that is given, like a prize, to someone for their accomplishments.

它是颁发给某人的一些有价值的东西,就像奖项,因为某人取得了成就。

“Awards” are usually given by someone to someone else.

awards通常是由某人给予其他人。

The student received an award from the teacher for not missing any school days.

这名学生因从来没有缺课而得到了老师的嘉奖。

As a verb, “award” means to give someone something, like a prize or money, for an accomplishment.

作为动词,award的意思是因某人取得成就,而给某人某种东西,比如奖品或金钱。

The judges awarded first place to the dance group.

评委们把第一名颁给了舞蹈组。

In the area of law, “award” has slightly different meanings.

在法律领域,award的含义略有不同。

As a verb, “award” means to give an official judgment of an amount or sum of money.

作为动词,award的意思是对一笔钱作出官方判决。

As a noun, “award” is the amount of money the court or judge decides.

作为名词,award是指法院或法官判决的钱款金额。

The judge awarded money to the victims.

法官把钱判给受害者。

The award totaled 2.5 million dollars.

赔偿总额为250万美元。

Let’s move on to “reward.”

让我们继续讲“奖励”。

“A reward” is a benefit given to someone in exchange for a certain behavior or action.

reward是为了换取某人的某种行为或行动而给予的好处。

The reward for all the students passing the test was an ice cream party.

对所有通过考试的学生的奖励是一个冰淇淋派对。

There is a $500 reward for returning the lost dog.

找回走失的狗有500美元的报酬。

“Reward” as a verb means to give someone a reward for their actions or behavior.

reward作为动词,意思是对某人的行动或行为给予奖励。

I rewarded my cat with some fish after he did a trick.

我的猫表演了一个动作后,我奖励了它一些鱼。

Sometimes you do not need anyone to reward you. You can reward yourself.

有时你不需要任何人来奖励你。你可以奖励自己。

Victoria rewarded herself with a weekend trip to the countryside after a hard work week.

维多利亚在辛苦工作了一周后,奖励自己周末去乡村旅行。

Remember, “award” is based on accomplishments.

记住,award(奖项)是基于成就的。

And "reward” is based on behaviors or actions.

而reward(奖励)则是基于行为或行动的。
