I'm the Wutong senior curator of Chinese art, here at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Daoliantu was probably the first Chinese painting I ever saw.
《捣练图》可能是我见到的第一幅中国画。
I have now seen it over my whole lifetime.
我一生都在看它。
And every time that I look at it, I'm so moved.
每次我看着它，我都很触动。
The painting was a copy created by Song Huizong or the artist in his imperial academy.
这幅画是宋徽宗或者翰林院的画家创作的复制品。
Who was Song Huizong?
宋徽宗是谁?
Song Huizong was the emperor of China at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty.
宋徽宗是中国北宋末年的皇帝。
But he was also an artist.
但他也是一位艺术家。
The painting is an image of three different processes in making silk.
这幅画描绘了三种不同的丝绸制作过程。
The first step we see is women pounding the silk to soften it.
我们能看到，第一步是女性敲打丝绸使其软化。
Then, we see women working with the strands of silk themselves.
然后，我们看到妇女自主用丝线工作。
One woman is creating the strands, another woman is sewing with them.
一个女人织线，另一个女人缝线。
And then we see a group of women who are ironing the silk to make it beautiful and flat.
然后我们看到一群妇女在熨烫丝绸，使它美丽而平整。
Among the paintings that were in Song Huizong’s collection was a painting called Daoliantu.
在宋徽宗的收藏中，有一幅画叫《捣练图》。
And it was by the Tang Dynasty artist Zhang Xuan.
这幅画出自唐代艺术家张萱之手。
And Song Huizong’s painting was definitely a copy of another painting that was in his collection.
宋徽宗的这幅画绝对是他收藏的另一幅画的复制品。
So we know that the composition was generally the same composition.
所以我们知道它们的结构是一样的。
And in the descriptions of the Zhang Xuan, descriptions tell us that there actually was a background.
在张萱的描绘中，我们可以发现实际上有一个背景。
The the women were standing in a scenery with trees and background in in a garden.
这些妇女站在一个有树木和背景的花园中。
But, in the Song Huizong painting we just see figures, we don't see any background.
但是，在宋徽宗的画中，我们只看到人物，看不到任何背景。
So who are these women?.
那么这些女人是谁呢?
If we look at them, they're not wearing clothes that a farmer or a woman who lived in the country's side would be wearing.

We’re looking at the fabulous, different textiles that they are wearing on their bodies.
我们能看到她们身上穿着精美的、不同的纺织品。
Some of them are brocades.
有些是织锦。
Some of them are damasks.
有些是花缎。
And one of them, if you look really closely, in fact, is a tie-dye, in Chinese,”Zha Ran.”
其中一个，如果你仔细看，实际上是一个扎染织物，中文叫“扎染”。
And it's made with a special technique.
它是用一种特殊的技术制作的。
In addition to the fabrics and the clothing that these women are wearing, there are a couple of other features to look at.

One is their hair decoration.
一是她们的头发装饰。
They actually wore decorations on their heads.
她们头上还戴着装饰品。
Little paper cuts that they pinned to their forehead or paper cuts that they put in their hair and combs.

So, it's a different way of decorating the body.

The other thing to look at is the furnishings.

One woman is sitting on an exquisite stool.

It is lacquer with mother of pearl inlay in it.

And then she's sitting on a brocade cushion.

So they're not country women.

These are court women.

These are women from the imperial court.
