This week on Ask a Teacher, we answer a question from Arslan in Kashmir.
本周《名师答疑》,我们回答来自克什米尔的阿斯兰的一个问题。
He asks: Is it correct to use "may" and "will" in a single sentence like in "Maybe it will rain today"?
他问:在同一个句子中使用may和will是否正确?比如Maybe it will rain today.(也许今天会下雨。)
The word "may" suggests a possibility while "will" shows certainty.
may表示一种可能性,而will则表示确定性。
Thank you.
谢谢。
Hello Arslan, this is a good question.
你好,阿斯兰,这是一个很好的问题。
Here is the answer. The word "maybe" is an adverb that means possibly but not definitely.
以下是回答。maybe是一个副词,意思是“可能,但不一定”。
It expresses that an action has a chance of happening in the future, as in your example: "Maybe it will rain today."
它表示一个行动有可能在未来发生,就像你举的例子:今天可能会下雨。
"May" and "maybe" are closely connected but they are different parts of speech.
may和maybe很接近,但它们是不同的词性。
The word "may" is a modal verb.
may是情态动词。
"Will" is also a modal verb.
will也是情态动词。
It expresses that something is expected to happen in the future.
它表示预计未来会发生一些事情。
You were right to question the use of two modal verbs together.
你对两个情态动词一起使用的质疑是正确的。
For example, you would not want to say, "It may will rain today."
例如,不能说It may will rain today.(今天可能将会下雨。)
But again, "maybe" is an adverb, not a modal.
但同样,maybe是一个副词,而不是情态动词。
So saying, "Maybe it will rain today" is totally acceptable.
所以,说Maybe it will rain today是完全可以接受的。
Another example that uses both "maybe" and "will" is "Maybe my friends will visit."
另一个同时使用maybe和will的例子是Maybe my friends will visit.(也许我的朋友会来拜访。)
Keep in mind that using the modal "may" or "might" is a more common way to express these kinds of possibilities.
请记住,使用情态动词may或might是表达可能性的更常见的用法。
For instance, you can say, "It may rain today" or "My friends might visit."
例如,你可以说,It may rain today或My friends might visit。
And lastly, there is another meaning of "will" that does express certainty.
最后,will还有另一个意思,它确实表达了确定性。
For example, if I say, "You will really enjoy this lesson," it shows that I feel sure of it.
例如,如果我说You will really enjoy this lesson(你会喜欢这节课的),这表明我对此很确定。
And that's Ask a Teacher for this week.
