Today on Ask a Teacher, a reader from Brazil asks about two common adverbs.
今天的名师答疑节目中,一位来自巴西的读者提出了关于两个常见的副词的问题。
Here is his question:
下面是他的问题:
Hello from Brazil! Teacher, could you explain to us how and when to use "as well" and "too"? Obrigado! – Luan Garcia, Brazil
我在巴西向你问好!老师,你能给我们解释一下as well和too怎么用吗,以及什么时候用?
Hello, Luan!
你好!
I am happy to talk about the terms "as well" and "too."
我很乐意谈论as well和too。
I am also happy to talk about the word "also."
我也很乐意谈论also这个词。
All three are adverbs that mean "in addition."
三者都是副词,有“另外”之意。
They are used in similar ways.
它们的用法非常相似。
Let me start with when to use them.
我们先来看看什么时候使用它们。
"Too" is the most informal but is often the best choice when speaking American English.
“too”是最不正式的,但在说美式英语时,“too”通常是最佳选择。
"As well" is a little more formal than "too" and less common in American spoken English.
“as well”比“too”稍微正式一点,在美式口语中不太常见。
Many Americans do use it in writing, however.
但是,很多美国人会在写作中使用as well。
"Also" is generally more common in writing than speech.
“also”在写作中比在口语中更常见。
Now let's examine how they are used.
我们来认真看一下该如何使用它们。
"Too" and "as well" usually come at the end of sentences.
“too”和“as well”通常出现在句尾。
Listen to a short exchange:
来听一段简短的对话:
Jerome is going to Mardi Gras.
Jerome要去参加狂欢节。
I'm going to Mardi Gras, too!
我也要去狂欢节!
The person could use "as well," although it sounds somewhat formal:
也可以用“as well”,只是听起来有点正式:
I'm going to Mardi Gras as well.
我也要去狂欢节。
The word "also" can appear many places in a sentence or clause. Here are a few.
“also”这个词可以出现在句子或从句的很多地方。这里有几个例子。
At the start of a sentence, it can be used to present a new subject:
在一个句子的开头,它可以用来展示一个新的话题:
We're so excited. Also, we brought a surprise.
我们太激动了。还有,我们带来了一个惊喜。
But more often "also" appears in other positions, such as before the main verb:
不过,“also”更常出现在其他位置,比如,在主动词之前:
We're so excited. We also brought a surprise.
我们太激动了。我们还带来了一个惊喜。
When "be" is the main verb, "also" comes after "be":
当“be”是主动词时,“also”放在“be”之后:
I am also really excited.
我也很兴奋。
Lastly, none of these adverbs are used in negative statements. Instead, use the word "either" or "neither."
最后一点是,这些副词都不用于否定句中。否定句使用either或neither。
I can't go to Mardi Gras this year.
今年我不能去狂欢节了。
That's sad. Neither can I.
真令人伤心。我也不能去。
I can't either.
我也不能去。
And, one small note about "too: " It has a second meaning but that will be a subject for another day!
关于too要说的一点是:它还有第二层意思,将作为另外一天节目的主题!
And that's Ask a Teacher.
