You may remember last week's program, in which I talked about rules of English word stress for two-syllable words.
大家可能还记得上周的节目。在那期节目中,我们聊了英语中双音节单词的重音规则。
If you missed that program, take a few minutes to read and listen to it first and then join us here.
如果您错过了那期节目,不妨花几分钟时间来读一读、听一听,然后再来听本期的节目。
This week, we continue talking about word stress, based on a question from our reader Larissa.
本周,我们将继续聊一聊单词重音的规则,根据就是读者Larissa提的一个问题。
Hi again, Larissa! Let's begin with three-syllable words.
拉瑞莎,又见面啦!我们从三音节单词说起吧。
Three-syllable words that end in –er and –ly often stress the first syllable.
三音节单词若是以-er结尾,或是以-ly结尾,那么其重音通常都在第一个音节上。
Listen to some examples: readily quietly perfectly manager gardener busier.
下面听几个例子:容易地;乐意地;完美地;经理;园丁;更加繁忙的。
Note these words are a mix of adverbs, adjectives and nouns.
请注意,这些单词里,副词、形容词和名词都有,
But the part of speech is not important here.
但在这里,词性并不重要。
We are focused on word endings.
因为我们关注的是单词的词尾。
Next: Words ending in –ic, –tion and –sion usually have their stress on the second-to-last syllable.
接下来说说以-ic、-tion、-sion结尾的单词。这类单词的重音在第二个到最后一个音节上。
This is true for words with three or more syllables.
这个规则适用于三个或三个以上音节的单词。
Listen carefully. Word meaning is not important here: embryonic catatonic organization rendition permission indecision.
下面请听仔细了,单词的含义并不重要:胚胎的;紧张性精神症的;组织;演奏;允许;优柔寡断。
Several other word endings decide word stress.
还有一些词尾可以决定单词的重音,
They are –al, –gy, –cy, –ty and –phy.
它们是:–al、–gy、–cy、–ty和–phy。
For these, the stress is on the third-to-last syllable.
对于带有这些词尾的单词来说,重音在第三个音节到最后一个音节上。
That sounds complex, but it's easier than you think.
这听起来很复杂,但其实比你想象的简单。
For example, here is a word you've probably heard often: photography.
例如,有一个单词大家很有可能经常听到:摄影。
Listen to a few more: entomology democracy physical morbidity autobiography.
再来听几个单词:昆虫学;民主;身体的;物理的;发病率;病态;自传。
Keep in mind a few things as you learn and practice English word stress.
在学习和练习英语单词重音的时候要记住几点。
First: Some multi-syllable words have two stresses.
第一点:一些多音节单词是有2个重音的。
We call them primary stress (the main, louder stress) and secondary stress (the lower, softer stress).
我们称之为主重音(主要的重音,发声力度更大)和次重音(力度小一些)。
Take the word "alligator." It has four syllables.
以单词“短吻鳄(alligator)”为例,它有4个音节。
The primary stress is on the first syllable.
主重音在第1个音节上,
But the third syllable does have a softer, secondary stress.
第3个音节还有一个发声力度小一些的次重音。
Second: In English, we stress only vowel sounds.
第二点:在英语中,只有元音才有重音,
We do not stress consonants.
辅音是不会标注重音的。
For instance, in the word "photography," I stressed the second vowel.
比如,在单词“摄影(photography)”中,我会在第2个元音上重读。
I said it louder and longer than the other vowels. Listen again: photography.
此处比其他元音的发声力度更大、时间也更久。让我们再来听一次:摄影(photography)。
The unstressed syllables are low, fast and often unclear.
没有重读的音节更低,读的更快,通常也没有那么清晰。
And that brings us to our last point: It may feel strange to say some parts of a word lower, quicker and less clear than other parts but, with practice, it will begin to feel more natural.
第三点,也是最后一点:大家可能会觉得——要让某个单词的某些部分发音比其他部分更低、更快、更不清晰是很奇怪的,但是只要加以练习,就会开始感觉更加自然了。
And that's Ask a Teacher.
以上就是今日名师答疑的全部内容。
