Police say a number of inmates have surrendered, with a tense standoff continuing at a juvenile detention centre on the New South Wales central coast. The violent riot at the Frank Baxter Centre at Kariong, is reported to have started just before nine last night. Two youths have been taken to Sydney’s Royal North Shore hospital in a serious condition, while four others are in Gosford Hospital.
National security will be high on the agenda when Federal Parliament returns today. The Coalition wants its Temporary Exclusion Orders Bill passed by the end of the week. The legislation aims to prevent foreign fighters deemed a risk from returning home to Australia for up to two years.
And Chinese swimmer Sun Yang has accused Australia's Mack Horton of disrespecting China. Horton refused to share the podium with Mr Yang after last night's 400 metres freestyle final at the World Championships in South Korea. Yang won gold and Horton took silver, but the Australian would not stand on the step next to his arch-rival, who is facing doping allegations.
