Taking photos, making observations, the young citizen scientists documented many kinds of plants and animals as they can.
The competition is in its second year and is growing.
"But this year, it's L.A. versus San Francisco and New York and Chicago and Seattle and many, many other cities.
And we are hoping to find as much nature in each of these different cities and it's a bit of a competition."
Thousands of people participate, finding thousands of species.
"Today I found at my school a mourning dove, and two mourning doves in their nest
and now we're here I found ants...ants, bees and a house finch."
But the kids are working with some real scientists who study the species in this region.
"We actually stay in one of the world's 35 top biodiversity hot spots,
which means we have both incredible biodiversity and we also have a large threat to that biodiversity."
This nine-year-old loves observing nature.
"What they like about it is diversity miracle and experience different things like,
in nature like finding different species of birds and insects."
A bird at their school has captured the interest of these youngsters.
"Just that little bird, less than an ounce, brings up so many wonderings about geography and range and weather,
and why does it like this tree?
And these questions form in students' minds, and they're off and running."
The exercise has a lesson.
"We are part of this environment, and they are part of this environment—the plants, the animals, the critters that live here.
So it's really helping us to understand how to increase the health of our environment."
And (it's) getting people of all ages involved in science.
