The Chicago Police Department is adding almost 1,000 new officers to the streets over the next two years as the city deals with record violence and shooting death numbers not seen in decades:
(Officer Johnson) “I owe you a department stronger in numbers, equipped for the 21st century, richer in skills and best practices to manage and challenge peacefully and honorably.”
Superintendent Eddie Johnson on the force’s largest hiring effort in years and the one big question is how the cash strapped city will pay for it.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who’s resisted hiring new officers, was not in attendance, though separately, he’s set to address the city’s rise in crime this week.
