Many cities in South China have raised their first-ever red storm alert this year, as Typhoon Nida made landfall earlier today.
Strong waves have damaged a dam in Guangdong province. The typhoon has also caused power interruptions, affecting more than 10,000 people. In Guangzhou, all work, production, and school classes were suspended. Residents have been advised to stay indoors.
Nearly 2,000 workers constructing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge were evacuated, and more than 2,000 others working on an offshore oil platform were relocated.
China’s weather agency says Typhoon Nida is the strongest cyclone to hit the Pearl River Delta since 1983. The agency has alerted local officials and residents against severe flooding.
