The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff has been met with angry protesters on his visit to Turkey. General Joseph Dunford held talks on Monday wtih Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and military chief Hulusi Akar in Ankara, as crowds demonstrated against his visit.
The fallout from last month's failed coup has deepened a rift between Ankara and its Western allies. Turkey has urged the US to extradite the cleric it blames for the coup attempt, Fethullah Gulen.
About 150 protesters marched to the US embassy in Ankara, holding posters that read "Coup plotter Dunford get out of Turkey" and "Dunford go home. Send us Fethullah."
The US wants to make Turkey a colony. As Turkish patriots, we revolutionists want to create a defense line. We want to end the presence of the US in Turkey.
He's here to divide us and make Turkey a satellite of the United States. As you know there was an attempted coup on July 15th, which the US and Fethullah backed. He is one of the architects of this coup. We repulsed the coup and now we will repulse General Dunford.
