Thousands of people rallied in public squares of major cities across Turkey overnight Sunday into Monday, in a show of support for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after a failed coup.
In Istanbul, they waved Turkish flags and thronged the central Taksim square, while in the capital Ankara, a smaller crowd gathered outside the gates of the presidential palace complex. Turkey's Foreign Ministry says the coup attempt that started on Friday night and was contained by Saturday morning, left at least 290 people dead and more than 1,400 injured.
The ministry said at least 190 killed were civilians and the rest coup plotters. More than 6,000 people have been detained for involvement in the coup.
