Auditors Probe Reservoir Repair Projects

China is sending auditors out all over the country, to 1 that its 4-trillion-yuan investment package is not abused. A team of auditors and engineers from Beijing are touring around the country, to probe into the repair and maintenance work of dams and reservoirs. Damin has more.

Auditors with the State Auditing Administration have just found that officials at a local government in the southeastern province of Fujian have applied for more money than they need, for a reservoir repair project.

Senior Auditor Hao Shikun is 2 .

"Only when we got here did we find that one of the four alleged reservoir walls is actually a mountain. And they have asked for the money for revamping four cement walls."

His colleague Yang Xianlong says this is just one of many faults they have detected.

"Some of the reservoir construction shows clear signs of 3 . And there are a few cases of blown-out budgetary estimates, to get money for certain jobs that never existed."

But overall, auditors say the results of their investigations have proved to be promising, since investigations started last November at 400 major project sites in 18 provinces and administrative regions.

Most of the dams received solid repair work while the 4 of the government money is being put to good use.

Pan Xiaojun is Director of the Investment Audit Department under the State Auditing Administration.

He says the auditors have been extremely meticulous in their work. Considering the technological complications of the tasks, they never hesitate to ask for professional assistance.

"To be able to determine whether the quality of repair work is 5 the project contractors claimed, we needed some professional eyes. So we hired a special team of engineers."

Some 300 engineering experts are now providing technical advice and working closely with the auditors at the project sites.

The auditors have pledged they will sift through the account books of all major projects funded by the stimulus package.
