PART 1 - The Dialogue
上一讲,Aunty Doris和Uncle Norm接受了侄女Kerry和她丈夫Chris的邀请,约定来吃晚饭.在这一讲里,你可以听到人们在社交场合说些什么.两位客人来到以后,有这样一段对话:
CHRIS:
Can I get you a drink, Aunty Doris?
DORIS:
Oh,yes,please...
CHRIS:
Lemonade? Beer? Orange juice?
DORIS:
Um-orange juice,please,Chris.
CHRIS:
O.K. And Uncle Norm-what'll you have? A beer?
NORM:
Yes,please,Chris.
DORIS:
Mm...You've got a nice place here,Kerry.
NORM:
Yes. Very nice.
KERRY:
Thanks. Would you like some peanuts?
DORIS:
Oh,no, thanks,dear. I don't want to spoil my dinner.
CHRIS:
Right. Here you are, Aunty Doris ,orange juice. And a beer for you, Uncle Norm.
PART 2 - Vocabulary

PART 3 - The Lesson
ENTERTAINING 请客
1. GREETING AND WELCOMING 迎接
客人来了,我们首先要表示欢迎,可以这样说:
Good to see you!
It's nice to see you!
Glad you could come!
客人也许这样回答:
Thanks for inviting us.
然后我们就主动帮助客人拿衣物,可以说:
Let me take your things.
还可以热情地请客人不要拘束:
Make yourselves at home.
如果只有一位客人,就说:
Make yourself at home.
2. OFFERING FOOD AND DRINKS 让茶让菜
向客人让茶让菜,可以这样说:
Can I get you a drink?
Would you like some peanuts?
Help yourself to some vegetables.
让客人再喝点酒,再吃点菜,可以说:
Would you like another beer?
Would you like some more chicken?
3. ACCEPTING 接受
主人让菜,客人如果接受,往往可以说Thanks,而不说Yes,please.例如:
Would you like some lemonade?
-Thanks.
表示接受,还可以说:
I won't say no./I wouldn't say no.
4. DECLINING 不接受
如果主人一让再让,客人不能接受,就可以这样客气地说:
Would you like some more?
- No, thanks.
- Not just at the moment, thanks.
- Thanks,but I really couldn't.
- No more for me, thanks.
后面还可以补充一句:
That was delicious.
PART 4 - Background Material
在澳大利亚，到别人家里去做客,不能比约定的时间早到,而要晚到几分钟。比如约定的时间是六点半，客人应在六点半至六点三刻之间到达.(当然，业务方面的约会是不能迟到的。)
客人到了以后，一面聊天,一面喝各种饮料，吃些下酒的小菜，然后主人请客人入座。宴席可以摆在饭厅里，也可以摆在客厅的一端。
小型宴会通常有三道菜，以第二道为主。前面—道是汤，或者小菜，后面—道是甜食。
三道菜过后，女主人上咖啡，或者上茶，可以在饭桌上喝，也可以回到客厅舒舒服服地喝。这样喝着咖啡聊天，到十点钟左右，客人就告辞了。
