Luxembourg's royal family is in mourning.

Prince Frederik -- the youngest son of Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julie of Nassau -- has died at the age of 22 from a rare genetic disease.

With Frederick's father announcing the tragic news in a March 7 statement, saying, "It is with a very heavy heart that my wife and I would like to inform you of the passing of our son."

Frederick passed on March 1, 2025 in Paris, France, the City of Lights.

Frederick was diagnosed with PolG mitochondrial disease at the age of 14.

According to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, PolG is a rare disorder caused by mutations in a person's genes, negatively impacting multiple organs including the brain and liver.

And while there is currently no cure for the illness, Frederick and his family began the PolG foundation to help others suffering with the condition and fund research to better understand it.
