The Pancake Man
摊煎饼的人
Once, there was a boy called Francis who lived with his father.
从前，有个男孩叫弗朗西斯，他和父亲住在一起。
His mother had died when he was young, and for many years, his father was very sad.
他的母亲在他很小的时候就去世了，多年来，他的父亲一直非常悲伤。
When his mother was alive, every weekend one of them made pancakes for Francis.
他母亲还活着的时候，每个周末他们中的一个都会给弗朗西斯做煎饼。
For many years after she died, Francis’s dad never made pancakes, but one day, he woke up and said, ‘Francis, would you like pancakes for breakfast?’
在她死后的许多年里，弗朗西斯的父亲从未做过煎饼。但是有一天，他醒来说：“弗朗西斯，你早餐想吃煎饼吗？”
After that day, Francis’s father made pancakes every day. He fell in love with pancakes.
从那天起，弗朗西斯的父亲每天都做煎饼。他爱上了煎饼。
Francis was happy at first, because he loved pancakes and he loved watching his father flip them.
弗朗西斯一开始很高兴，因为他喜欢煎饼，也喜欢看父亲翻转煎饼。
Francis’s father would buy bigger and bigger frying pans, and make bigger and bigger pancakes.
弗朗西斯的父亲会买越来越大的煎锅，做越来越大的煎饼。
Soon, he made giant pancakes, bigger than pizzas.
很快，他做出了比披萨还大的巨型煎饼。
He held the frying pan with both hands and said, ‘Ready?’
他双手拿着煎锅说：“准备好了吗？”
Francis would say, ‘Yes, Dad!’ and then his dad would flip the pancake.
弗朗西斯会说：“准备好了，爸爸！”然后他爸爸就会把煎饼翻过来。
The pancakes were so big that when he flipped them, they made a WHOOSHING sound.
这些煎饼太大了，翻转的时候，它们会发出嗖嗖的声音。
It was like an aeroplane flying through the room. It was magic!
就像一架飞机飞过房间。太神奇了！
But soon, it was too much. Every morning, Francis came downstairs and found a mountain of giant pancakes on his plate.
但很快，煎饼就太多了。每天早上，弗朗西斯下楼时，都会发现盘子里有一大堆巨大的煎饼。
They were so big that he could only eat one.
它们太大了，他只能吃一个。
His dad put the rest in a box for Francis to take to school, but he was sick of pancakes.
他爸爸把剩下的放在一个盒子里，让弗朗西斯带去学校，但他已经厌倦了煎饼。
They had pancakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
他们早餐、午餐和晚餐都吃煎饼！
So he gave the pancakes to his friends, and took their sandwiches and apples.
于是他把煎饼给了他的朋友，换来了他们的三明治和苹果。
His friends loved the pancakes, so Francis had an idea.
他的朋友们都喜欢煎饼，所以弗朗西斯有了一个主意。
‘Dad, why don’t you sell your pancakes?’ Francis’s dad looked afraid for a moment.
‘爸爸，你干脆去卖煎饼怎么样？’一时间，弗朗西斯的爸爸看起来有点害怕。
‘Oh no,’ thought Francis. ‘He thinks the pancakes are what connect us with Mum.’
“哦，不，”弗朗西斯想。“他认为煎饼是把我们和妈妈联系起来的东西。”
‘But Francis,’ said Dad, ‘the pancakes are what connect us with your mother. We can’t share them with other people.’
“但是弗朗西斯，”爸爸说，“是煎饼把我们和你妈妈联系在一起的。我们不能和别人分享。”
Francis spoke carefully. ‘Don’t you think… Mum would want us to share them? She loved sharing food with people.’
弗朗西斯小心翼翼地说。“你不觉得……妈妈会希望我们把煎饼分享出去吗？她喜欢和别人分享食物。”
Francis’s dad started to cry. ‘Oh, Francis, you’re right!’
弗朗西斯的爸爸哭了起来。“哦，弗朗西斯，你说得对！”
So he ran a little shop outside their house and started selling pancakes.
于是他在他们家外面开了一家小店，开始卖煎饼。
At first, he only ran the shop after work or on the weekend.
起初，他只在下班后或周末才经营煎饼店。
But soon, his pancakes became very popular, and everyone started talking about ‘The Pancake Man’.
但很快，他的煎饼变得非常受欢迎，每个人都开始谈论“摊煎饼的人”。
His shop became so popular that he left his job and only worked at the pancake shop.
他的店变得超受欢迎，于是他辞掉了工作，专门经营煎饼店。
Francis was very happy. Because his dad sold all the pancakes, he gave Francis money to buy different food.
弗朗西斯非常高兴。因为他爸爸卖掉了所有的煎饼，他给弗朗西斯钱去买不同的食物。
Finally, Francis could have pizza and pies and vegetables! He ate carrots until he was sick of them.
最后，弗朗西斯可以吃披萨、派和蔬菜了！他一直吃胡萝卜，直到吃腻为止。
Francis’s dad was also very happy.
弗朗西斯的爸爸也很高兴。
Everyone loved watching him flip the giant pancakes, and they always clapped afterwards.
每个人都喜欢看他翻转巨大的煎饼，然后他们总会鼓掌。
Years later, everyone in the city knew about The Pancake Man, and they opened up a restaurant in town.
几年后，城里的所有人都认识了摊煎饼的人，他们在城里开了一家餐馆。
While Francis’s father flipped pancakes and ran the restaurant, Francis worked hard at school.
弗朗西斯的父亲翻转煎饼和经营餐馆时，弗朗西斯就在学校努力学习。
He was very interested in space, and wanted to be an astronaut when he grew up.
他对太空非常感兴趣，长大后想成为一名宇航员。
His father was so busy with the pancake business that he didn’t see him very much.
他的父亲忙着做煎饼生意，所以很少见到他。
Francis finished school, and went to university to study astrophysics.
弗朗西斯完成了学业，进入大学学习天体物理学。
He wanted to go to a good university, far away from home, but his dad wanted him near.
他想上一所离家很远的好大学，但他爸爸想让他离得近一点。
So he went to the university in their city. It wasn’t so good, but if he worked hard, he thought he could still go to space.
所以他去了本市的大学。学校不是很好，但如果他努力工作，他认为他仍然可以去太空。
But one day, Francis’s father had a horrible accident.
但是有一天，弗朗西斯的父亲发生了一场可怕的事故。
One of the giant frying pans in the restaurant fell and hit him on the head.
餐馆里的一只大煎锅掉了下来，砸在了他的头上。
He went to hospital, and the doctors said he didn’t have long to live.
他去了医院，医生说他活不长了。
