I'm really enjoying watching the Olympics and I'm excited that we're going to talk about it today, especially about some of the controversies that make for really interesting conversations.

So we've talked to some on the All Ears English podcast about phrases you can use when something's controversial. When you know you might not see eye to eye, right?

We got into diamond mining, the environments and issues that are sort of hot button issues where not everyone agrees.

Yeah, I am excited to give our listeners the tools, but first let's see what's going on in the world. Aubrey,What is going on? What is the first big controversy?

I think this one is a little less well known, but you were in Salt Lake City when this happened. A littele,so this one right? So it feels really well known to me.

There was a bribery scandal with the Olympics in 2002 for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

And what happens is the Olympic Committee when they were making a bid to host the Olympics they were bribing.

The Salt Lake City was bribing the Olympic Committee. and it ended up causing this huge problem.

10 members of the International Olympic Committee either resigned or were expelled for accepting cash and gifts and it sort of changed the way Olympic bids happened.

They've cracked down on this, so in this corruption they're trying to make it so that it's not so possible to sort of bribe your way into hosting the Olympics.

Okay, good to know, so this was back in 2002, so hopefully things are less or more bribery proof. I guess right. And the scandal broke in 98. So that's kind of fascinating.

How long, often it's a decade before a city hosts the Olympics that they're putting in their bid.

You know, hosting the Olympics towards the end is another topic, but the next one is transgender athletes.

And the important thing to know here is that the International Olympic Committee is moving more towards kind of respecting what people feel is their gender.

okay, and how are they doing that opry? What's going on?

Just in January of this year 2024, the International Olympic Committee issued new guidelines on transgender athletes, so in the past they required athletes to undergo hormone level modifications, they have removed that they're no longer requiring these.

Their goal,they now have these principles they're describing as grounded on the respect for internationally recognized human rights.

And so the goal is to no longer make them prove or give evidence of some of these things. Of these the hormone therapies that they're doing.

It has come up a lot for me too, because friends, children are competing against transgender athletes in schools and high schools and colleges, and so it's not just at the Olympic level, right?

This is something that a lot of people are interested in and not everyone agrees about how it should work.

Yes, exactly right. Doping. I guess it's a noun here because it's like the act of doping, right?

So this is when there's use of performance enhancing drugs and this happens a lot in sports steroid use.

The first alembic athlete, this happened way back in 1968, the first athlete to test positive, but at the time it was just alcohol.

He said he had 2 beers to steady his nerves, but that also is not allowed. So it's more systematic.Right, Lindsey？

Yeah, and doping is an issue not just in the Olympics but other sporting events in different sports for sure.

And so that's a really interesting one, and we'll see which one we choose to explore in the final episode of this series.

But mental health and over training has come up lately around certain like key athletes that have highlighted this issue, right?

Exactly. This has probably always been an issue.

Anyone who competes in sports knows that this is a real risk of over training of not having a balance with how much time you spend training when you really have goals to be the best at a sport.

So this happens a lot that it can take a toll on your mental health.

Yeah, I was just listening to, I listened to the Daily Podcast and they brought in an interview with Serena Williams from another podcast I think that's owned by the New York Times.

I've seen this where if one of my children is not really passionate about a sport, but I just want them to get physical activity.
