Why is speaking Part 1 on IELTS so dangerous?

为什么雅思口语的第一部分如此危险?

Well, today, Jessica Beck, our examiner of excellence, will tell you why.

今天,杰西卡·贝克,我们的优秀考官,将告诉你为什么。

Hi Lindsey! Hey Jessica, how are you doing today? Good.

嗨,林赛!嗨,杰西卡,你今天过得好吗?很好。

I haven't talked to in a while. Are you?

我有一段时间没跟你说过话了,你过得怎么样?

Well, I'm doing great.

嗯,我很好。

I'm doing great and I'm excited cause we're here to talk about this nail biting thing they call speaking on the Ielts exam.

我很好,我很兴奋,因为我们要在这里讨论雅思考试口语这个令人听上去就让人害怕的问题。

No, yeah, this is something that's really intimidating to students.

不,是的,这对学生来说真的很吓人。

I mean it's intimidating for me sometimes also, right?

我是说,有时这对我来说也很吓人,对吧?

Yeah, we know,I mean if we just talk about general language learning, English learning, we know this is kind of the hot button where students kind of tend to get nervous and I understand how that feels, right?

是啊,我们知道,我的意思是,如果我们只谈论一般的语言学习,英语学习,我们知道这是一个敏感的按钮,学生们往往会感到紧张,我理解这种感觉,对吗?

I mean, we've both lived abroad like you've lived in Taiwan, right?

我是说,我们都住在国外,你住在台湾,对吧?

Yeah, and some countries in Europe, and just trying to get those words out to someone who's just staring at you impatiently or at least you think they're impatient.

是的,还有欧洲的一些国家,只是想把这些话传达给那些只是不耐烦地盯着你看的人,或者至少你认为他们不耐烦了。

It's tough. Yeah, I noticed that we always sort of imagine that the person is thinking something worse than they actually probably are.

这很难。是的,我注意到,我们总是在某种程度上想象这个人在想一些比他们实际可能想的更糟糕的事情。

Oh, totally. I'm sure the other person is very patient most of the time, but we're just too nervous to notice.

哦,完全正确。我相信对方大多数时候都很有耐心,但我们只是太紧张了,没有注意到。

Yeah, so we tend to think that it's a lot worse than it is, but either way there is speaking on the IELTS, so we want to help our listeners with that here, especially today.

是的,所以我们倾向于认为情况比实际情况糟糕得多,但无论是哪种方式,都是雅思口语考试,所以我们想在这里帮助我们的听众,特别是在今天。

So what, you've been teaching Ielts for 10 years. That's a really long time, Jessica. That's awesome.

那怎么样,你已经教了10年的英语了。这已经挺久了,杰西卡。太棒了。

It is a really long time, yeah, and I think the most important thing to remember is that the examiner does not want to give you a bad grade, you know, like what we just talked about.

确实挺长一段时间了,是的,我想最重要的是要记住,考官不想给你打低分,你知道,就像我们刚刚说的那样。

Sometimes they students go in and they think, oh my gosh! The examiner hates me.The examiner's evil.Exactly,

有时学生走进去,他们会想,哦,我的天哪!主考官讨厌我。主考官是恶魔。没错。

But you know the we as examiners they want you to to do your best and the test is also designed that way, so it starts in speaking part 1 and then it gets harder as you go along to speaking part 3.

但你知道我们作为考官希望你全力以赴,考试也是这样设计的,所以它从第一部分开始,然后随着第三部分的进行变得更难。

But today I wanted to start by talking about part 1 and what the examiner is looking for?

但今天我想从第一部分开始,以及考官想要看到什么?

So, the examiner wants you to talk about yourself and the answers are all very simple.

所以,考官想让你谈谈你自己,答案都很简单。

So for example: Do you drive a car? Do you think everyone should learn how to drive a car? Do you enjoy taking long car trips?

那么,举个例子,你开车吗?你认为每个人都应该学开车吗?你喜欢长途汽车旅行吗?

So just to clarify, in this section they're asking you questions about yourself right? As a test taker?

所以只是澄清一下,在这一部分,他们是在问你关于你自己的问题,对吗?作为一名考生?

Yeah.Okay,exactly.

是的,是的,就是这样。

So you're gonna be asked about 3 topics and they're all about you, do you go to school, do you have a job? Do you like your apartment? Just really simple stuff.

所以你会被问到三个话题,都是关于你的,你上学了吗,你有工作吗?你喜欢你的公寓吗?就只是非常简单的事情。

So the danger here is that some students get a little bit too relaxed and they start using like one word answers, you know.

所以这里的危险是,一些学生变得有点太放松了,他们开始用一个词来回答,你知道的。

Oh,no! That's... yeah, which I mean is unfair because in real life that's what we would do, right?

哦,不!那...是的,我的意思是这是不公平的,因为在现实生活中我们会这样做,对吗?

Like are you a student? Yeah. Do you like studying English? Sure. Stuff like that.

比如你是学生吗? 嗯。你喜欢学英语吗?当然。诸如此类的事情。

But you know, unfortunately it's not real life. It's a test, so you have to remember that and you have to use complete sentences all the time and you also should try and answer with at least 2 sentences.

但你知道,不幸的是,这不是真实的生活。这是一个测试,所以你必须记住这一点,你必须一直使用完整的句子,你还应该尝试用至少两句话回答。

So, I usually tell students try to answer in 3-4 sentences.

所以,我通常告诉学生试着用3-4句话回答。

so what would you put in that other sentence? For example, if I said if I asked you, you know, do you, yeah, do you drive, Jessica?

那么你会在另一句话里说些什么?例如,如果我说如果我问你,你知道,你,你开车吗,杰西卡?

Yeah! Okay, yes, I do, but what would you say beyond that?

开车!好吧,是的,我知道,但除此之外你还能说什么?

Yeah, good question?

是啊,问得好?

So I do a lot of brainstorming activities with my students to practice this.

所以我和我的学生做了很多头脑风暴来练习这一点。

So think of the question words: who? what?where?when?why?how?

那么想一想一些疑问词:谁?什么?哪里?什么时候?为什么?怎么做?

And those are the details you can give so my answer could be?

这些就是你可以给出的细节,所以我的答案可能是?

Um yeah, I drive I actually just got a new car 3 months ago, but I only drive it to work and back.

嗯,我开车,实际上我三个月前刚买了一辆新车,但我只开着它上下班。

Okay, I like that, I like that.

好的,我喜欢,我喜欢。

So who? what?where?when?why?how?I like that.

谁?什么?哪里?什么时候?为什么?怎么做?我喜欢这样。

I think you mentioned that when we were talking about Towic a few weeks ago and that's such a useful framework to have, isn't it?

我想你在几周前谈到Towic时提到了这一点,这是一个非常有用的框架,不是吗?

Yeah, and anytime when you're trying to talk and you're nervous and you can't think about what to say, those question words are how you can think of more details.

是的,任何时候,当你试图交谈,你紧张,你不知道该说什么时,这些疑问词就是你如何想出更多细节的方式。

And how else could you think of more details to kind of,oh, add more,I don't know, make your answer more unique or make it stand out more?

除此之外,你还能想出更多细节来,哦,添加更多内容, 我不知道, 让你的答案更独特,更突出?

What else would you think about adding?

你还会考虑增加什么呢?

Oh sure yeah, that's a really good point actually, that's something else that I wanted to talk about is the vocabulary part of things.

哦,当然,这是一个非常好的观点,这也是我想讨论的另一个问题,那就是词汇。

So of course you're graded on your vocabulary and if you want to stand out, if you want the examiner to notice you as a higher level student or a better student, a higher scoring student, then you should really try and use some slang, some informal words.

所以,当然,你的词汇量是打分的,如果你想脱颖而出,如果你想让考官注意到你是一个更高水平的学生,或者更好的学生,更高分的学生,那么你真的应该试着使用一些俚语,一些非正式的词。

The examiner wants to know that you have a range of vocabulary.

考官想知道你的词汇量是否很大。

So if you're talking about an informal topic, like what your apartment looks like, you're not gonna use academic words you know like that doesn't make sense.

因此,如果你在谈论一个非正式的话题,比如你的公寓是什么样子的,你不会使用你知道这没有意义的学术术语。

Of course not. Yeah, you're gonna use some slang, some idiom, so for example you could say well, the couches is super comfy.

当然不。是的,你会使用一些俚语,一些习语,比如,你可以说:“The couches is super comfy.”。

You know. I use that adverb a lot to describe adjectives. Me too. We all do.

你知道。我经常用这个副词来描述形容词。我也是。我们都是。

I think it's a generational thing or something we really do, and is it all the time.

我认为这是一代人的事情,或者是我们真正做的事情,而且一直都是这样。

So that's a good one, guys.

所以这是个不错的选择,伙计们。

Yeah, so yeah, like if I heard a student say that exact sentence, Oh, my couch is super comfy.

是的,所以,如果我听到一个学生说这句话:Oh, my couch is super comfy。

I'd be impressed. I'd be like, whoa, you must have American friends, that's all, and that gives you think this person is not you just limited to the textbook and the way they speak, right?

我会印象深刻的。我会想,哇,你肯定有美国朋友,仅此而已,这会让你认为这个人不只是局限于教科书li里的内容和教科书里说话的方式,对吗?

They've gone beyond the textbook exactly.

它们完全超出了教科书的范围。

And that's that's what we're talking about in the course, and the goal of these episodes is to get you to a 7 or higher.

这就是我们在课程中谈到的,这系列节目是为了让你达到7分或更高。

Well, that's how you do it.

好的,这就是你的方式。

So the description of a 7 for the speaking test is someone who can use idioms and a wider range of vocabulary, so the examiner is listening for stuff that you don't get from textbooks.

因此,口语测试中对7分的描述是一个可以使用习语和更广泛词汇的人,所以考官正在听你从教科书中学不到的东西。
