Mooncakes! There are so many versions of it. I mean like, a ton.
月饼！月饼有很多种版本。我是说，非常多。
Chinese people send this to each other every Zhong Qiu Jie, which is the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the lantern or mooncake festival.
中国人每逢中秋节（也称灯节或月饼节）都会互相送月饼。
But why do we eat this every year?
但是为什么我们每年都吃月饼呢？
There are a few famous tales about the custom's origins.
关于这个习俗的起源，有几个著名的故事。
One of them being mooncakes were used to hide notes.
其中一个是月饼被用来藏纸条。
It contained the date of a revolt against the Yuan Dynasty, which eventually helped the Han Chinese overthrow their Mongolian rulers.
它包含了反抗元朝的起义日期，这场起义最终帮助汉族人民推翻了蒙古统治者。
But the most famous folklore would be the love story between Chang'e and heroic archer Hou Yi.
但最著名的民间传说是嫦娥和英雄弓箭手后羿之间的爱情故事。
This is the legend of ten suns.

They were blazing in the morning sky in ancient China.
在中国古代，有十个太阳在晨空中闪耀着光芒。
It was so hot that it was burning people and crops to death.

So here comes the hero archer Hou Yi.
于是，英雄弓箭手后羿来了。
With his bow and arrows, he shot down nine suns, leaving only one sun in the sky, saving earth.
他用弓箭射下了九个太阳，只留下一个太阳在天上，拯救了地球。
As a reward, Hou Yi was given the elixir of immortality and he gave it to his wife Chang'e for safekeeping.
作为奖励，后羿得到了长生不老药，他把长生不老药交给他的妻子嫦娥保管。
On the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, Hou Yi's apprentice tried to steal the elixir when Hou Yi was out hunting.
在农历八月十五，后羿的徒弟在后羿外出打猎时企图偷走长生不老药。
In order to protect the elixir from the thieves, Chang'e drank the elixir on her own.
为了保护长生不老药不被小偷偷走，嫦娥自己喝下了长生不老药。
She then flew to the moon with her rabbit and became the moon goddess.
然后，她带着兔子飞到了月亮上，成为了月亮女神。
To remember Chang'e, Chinese people worship the moon by eating moon-shaped desserts like the mooncake on this very date when the moon is also believed to be the biggest and the roundest

The moon-worshipping practice has more than 3,000 years of history beginning with the Shang Dynasty.

Aside from Chinese New Year, Zhong Qiu Jie is the second most important festival for people of Chinese descent.
除了春节，中秋节是中国人第二个最重要的节日。
Traditionally, people pray and give thanks to the moon for good harvest.
传统上，人们祈祷并感谢月亮带来的好收成。
And today, it's not that much different.
而如今，情况并没有太大的不同。
It's a time for families to reunite over a meal: share mooncakes, drink osmanthus wine, play with lanterns, appreciate the moon and pray for happiness.
这是家人团聚在一起吃饭的日子：分享月饼，喝桂花酒，玩灯笼，赏月，祈求幸福。
So what makes a mooncake?
那么月饼是怎么做的呢？
The most common one is the traditional Cantonese-style baked mooncake.
最常见的是传统的广式月饼。
The skin is soft and it's usually filled with lotus paste or red bean, sometimes with one or two salted egg yolks in the middle.
它的皮很软，馅料通常是莲蓉或红豆，有时中间会放一两个咸蛋黄。
There's also the savoury wuren chashao mooncakes that are filled with mixed nuts and seeds and roast pork.
