Then he went to the little shop alongside and fashioned a high chair for Heidi, to the little girl's greatest amazement.
然后爷爷到旁边的一个小仓库里去，立刻做成了一把高椅子。海蒂惊奇地瞪着那把椅子说不出话来。
"What is this?" asked the grandfather.
“你看这是什么，海蒂？”
"This is a chair for me. I am sure of it because it is so high. How quickly it was made!"
“这么高，肯定是我的椅子喽。一眨眼就做成了，真快呀！”
said the child, full of admiration and wonder.
海蒂惊奇地感叹着说。
"She knows what is what and has her eyes on the right place,"
“这孩子的眼睛可不是个睁眼瞎呀，实在伶俐着呢。”
the grandfather said to himself, while he walked around the hut, fastening a nail or a loose board here and there.
爷爷一边嘀咕着，一边围着小屋转了一圈，这儿敲敲，那儿打打，往门上钉点什么。
He wandered about with his hammer and nails, repairing whatever was in need of fixing.
这样手拿锤子、钉子和木片来回走走，该修的就修理修理，没用的东西就敲掉。
Heidi followed him at every step and watched the performance with great enjoyment and attention.
海蒂在后面一步步地跟着，专心致志地看着。爷爷的每一件活计都是这么有趣。
At last the evening came.
不久，太阳落山了。
The old fir-trees were rustling and a mighty wind was roaring and howling through the tree-tops.
那几棵老枞树响得更起劲了。大风吹来，摇晃着浓密的枝叶，发出哗哗的声音。
Those sounds thrilled Heidi's heart and filled it with happiness and joy.
这声音传到海蒂的耳朵里、心里，都变成了美妙无比的音符。
She danced and jumped about under the trees, for those sounds made her feel as if a wonderful thing had happened to her.
海蒂快活极了，围着老枞树又蹦又跳，仿佛她生来从未这么开心过。
The grandfather stood under the door, watching her, when suddenly a shrill whistle was heard.
爷爷站在仓库门口，望着这情景。这时，响起了尖亮的口哨声。
Heidi stood still and the grandfather joined her outside.
蹦蹦跳跳的海蒂停下来，爷爷走到门外。
Down from the heights came one goat after another, with Peter in their midst.
一群山羊像是被驱赶着，从山上一只接一只地跑下来。羊群的正中间是彼特。
Uttering a cry of joy, Heidi ran into the middle of the flock, greeting her old friends.
海蒂欢呼着跑进羊群，和她那些早晨刚刚结识的朋友们一一问好。
When they had all reached the hut,
羊儿们在小屋前，
they stopped on their way and two beautiful slender goats came out of the herd, one of them white and the other brown.
一齐站住，从羊群中走出两只漂亮的母羊，一只褐色的，一只白色的，
They came up to the grandfather, who held out some salt in his hands to them, as he did every night.
它们走到爷爷身边，舔他的手。和平常的习惯一样，傍晚把两只羊领回来时，爷爷手里总要握上一把盐。
Heidi tenderly caressed first one and then the other, seeming beside herself with joy.
海蒂温柔地抚摸那两只小羊，一会摸摸这儿，一会摸摸那儿。她和这些小动物在一起真是快乐得不得了！
"Are they ours, grandfather? Do they both belong to us? Are they going to the stable? Are they going to stay with us?"
“这是咱们家的山羊吧，爷爷？这两只都是吧，它们住在小棚子里么？它们经常在家吗？”
Heidi kept on asking in her excitement.
海蒂高兴极了，问题一个接着一个，
The grandfather hardly could put in a "yes, yes, surely" between her numerous questions.
在她连珠炮似的问话中，爷爷想插一句“是啊！是啊！”都几乎找不出空。
