Reading and writing Chinese characters is perhaps the most difficult aspect of learning Chinese. But Chinese characters with similar meanings often have similar patterns, these base components of each character are called radicals.

读写汉字也许是学习中文最困难的方面。 但是具有相似的意思的汉字，通常有相似的模式，每个汉字的这些基本成分被称为部首。

character n. 字符；性格特征

Chinese character, 指的就是中国的「汉字」；而 character 这个单词有很多含义，常见的是指一个人的「性格，个性特征」， to have a strong/weak character 可以表示坚强，倔强的性格/ 性格软弱。

She has got a character.

她很有个性。

The address was written in Chinese characters.

地址是用汉字写的。

radical adj. 激进的，完全的；偏旁部首

Radical 做形容词可以表示思想比较极端，激进；或者是完全的，等同于 total, 比如 radical changes, 指的就是彻底的改变。而做名词，常用在化学中表示一个术语「游离基；自由基」; 衍生的含义就可以表示 the root or base form of a word， 「一个字的基本组成部分」，也就是表示汉字的偏旁部首。

These people have very radical views.

这些人的观点非常激进。

We need to make some radical changes.

我们需要做一些根本性的改变。

Chinese radicals are what we could think of as the base component of each character.

我们可以认为汉字的基本组成部分是偏旁部首。
