This is Everyday Grammar. I'm John Russell.
这里是《每日语法》节目。我是约翰·罗素。
I recently visited the school, and I saw that the teacher had an unusual lesson.
我最近去学校参观,看到老师在上一堂不同寻常的课。
The teacher was teaching about noncount nouns.
老师正在讲不可数名词。
The teacher pulled out a bag of dust and dumped it all over the floor.
老师拽出一袋尘土,把它全部倒在地上。
The teacher then told the students to count how many pieces of dust there were.
然后老师让同学们数一数这里有多少个尘土。
They had a difficult time with the assignment.
这个作业让大家很头疼。
What was the teacher's point?
老师这么做是为了什么?
The point is that some nouns in English are noncount nouns.
这么做的目的是告诉大家在英语中有些名词是不可数的。
They are too small or grainy or gooey to count.
因为它们太小、太多或太黏着而无法计数。
Although they may come in individual pieces, counting them is really difficult.
尽管它们也是由个体组成的,但是数起来非常困难。
Dust is one example.
灰尘就是一个例子。
Other examples include rice, salt, and sugar.
其它的例子还有米饭、盐和糖。
When nouns are noncount, you do not make them plural and you do not add an article before them.
当名词不可数时,不要使用它们的复数形式,也不要在它们前面加冠词。
So, no "a" "an" or "the".
所以,不要加“a”、“an”或者“the”。
Here are some examples.
举一些例子。
I like rice.
我喜欢吃米饭。
I don't like sugar.
我不喜欢吃糖。
I can't believe the teacher told them to pick up dust.
我不敢相信老师让我们捡灰尘。
While you cannot count rice, you can count grains of rice - referring to the individual pieces.
虽然米饭是不可数的,但是米粒是可数的——指单独的组成部分。
Similarly, you cannot count sugar, but you can count sugar crystals.
相似地,糖不可数,但是糖晶体是可数的。
This is how noncount nouns become count nouns.
这就是不可数名词如何变成可数名词的。
And that's Everyday Grammar.
以上就是今天的《每日语法》。
