Hi again. I'm Adam. In today's lesson we're going to look at phrasal verbs,
大家好,我是亚当。今天我们来学习动词短语,
and today's phrasal verb is -- starts with -- "head":
今天动词短语以“head”开始:
"head up", "head down", "head out", "head over", "head in" or "head inside" - both okay -, "head back", "head off", "head for".
“head up“,“head down”,“head out”,“head over”,“head in”或“head inside”,都可以,“head back”,“head off”,“head for”。
Okay? These are the ones we're going to look at and we're going to give examples of each one.
这就是我们要学习的短语,每个短语我们都会举一些例子。
First thing to notice: I have... I've grouped these all into one bunch.
第一件事:我把它们都归为一组。
Basically, these all mean "go". So when we say "head" with any one of these it means "go",
基本上,这些短语的意思都是“去”。当我们说到head和这些词当中的任何一个组成的短语时,它的意思就是去。
but where we go, the direction we go, that changes with each preposition.
但是去哪里,去哪个方向是随着介词的不同而变化的。
So let's look at them. When I say: "head up" generally I'm talking about going north. Okay?
我们来学习这些短语。当我说“head up”时,通常我说的就是去北边。
So if I'm in the US, I'm going to head up to Canada because I'm going north.
如果我在美国,我要北上去加拿大,因为我要去北边。
If I'm in Canada, I'm going to head down to the States
如果我在加拿大,我要南下去美国。
Generally speaking, when we travel or when we go somewhere or drive somewhere especially, we use "head up", "head down".
通常来说,当我们去旅行,或者当我们去什么地方,尤其是开车去什么地方,我们会使用“head up”,“head down”。
So again, "head up", "head down". If you're going east or west, you basically just "head over" to wherever you're going.
这就是“head up”,“head down”。如果你去东边或西边,你就用“head over”来表达去什么地方。
Actually let me get to this one: so "head over" means go to a destination or go to a place.
我来说说这个:“head over”意思是去一个目的地或一个地方。
So I'm sure some of you have heard the expression "come over". -"Hey, what are you doing?" -"Nothing." -"Well, come over."
我知道你们听过这个表达“come over”。“你在干什么?”“没干什么”。“过来一下”。
"Over" means over to my house or over to where I am.
“over”的意思就是去我家或者我在的地方。
So if you're going to head over to somewhere, you're going to go to a specific place.
所以如果你说“head over to somewhere”,你是要去某个特定的地方。
My friend calls me says: "Well, do you want to come over?"
我朋友给我打电话:“想来我家吗?”
And I say: "Yeah, I'll head over right now." Means I'm going to come to your house right now.
我说:“是的,我要过去了。”意思是我现在要去你家。
That goes with "head out". "Head out" basically means "go" but it also means "leave". Okay?
这和“head out”是一样的。“Head out”基本上是“去”的意思,但它也有“离开”的意思。好吧?
So if I'm going to "head out in five minutes" means I'm going to leave here in five minutes; I'm going to go in five minutes.
所以如果我说“head out in five minutes”,意思是我要在五分钟内离开这里;我五分钟后就走。
My friend calls me up, says: "Hey, you're late. Where are you?" Say: "Oh, sorry.
我的朋友打电话给我说:“嘿,你迟到了。你在哪儿?”说:“哦,对不起。
I got, some things came up. I'm going to head out in five minutes." -- I'm going to leave in five minutes.
有些事情耽误了。我五分钟后就出发。”我五分钟后离开。
If you're sitting outside, nice sunny day, drinking with your friends and then you get a little bit tired
如果你坐在外面,在一个阳光明媚的日子里,和朋友们一起喝酒,然后你会觉得有点累,
and you want to go inside your house you say: "I'm going to head in." Okay?
你想进去你的房子,你说:“我要进去了。”好吧?
"I'm going to head inside." Basically means "go in", "go inside".
“我要进去了。”意思就是“进去”,“进到里面”。
Usually you would say this when the "in" is understood like if you're outside your house, you're going to head in.
通常你会在别人理解“in”的时候说这个,比如,你在你的房子外面,你要进去了。
If you're in a patio of a restaurant and there's too much sun,
如果你在一家餐厅的露台上,天气很晒,
"I'm going to head in" or "head inside" -- inside the restaurant. Okay? "Head back" -- go back.
我要进去了,要进到餐厅里面了。“head back”就是回去。
We're going for a little trip and I'm getting a little bit tired or a little bit bored and I say: "You know what? Ah, forget it.
我们去旅行,我有点累了,有一些无聊,我就说:“你知道吗,算了。
I'm going to head back." I'm going to turn around, go back where I came from. Okay, all very easy.
我要回去了。”我要转身,回到我原来的地方。非常简单。
These two are a little bit different. "Head off" basically means to stop something from happening or to block,
这两个有一些不同。“head off”意思就是阻止某件事发生,或者妨碍这件事,
and I'll even say here prevent something from happening. Okay?
可以说是防止某件事发生。
So my girlfriend found out that my ex-girlfriend lives in the same city,
所以我女朋友发现我的前女友和我住在同一个城市,
and she found out that my ex-girlfriend is going to come over to my house and try to hook up again.
她发现我的前女友要到我家来,想再跟我搭上关系。
So my girlfriend is going to go head her off, she's going to go and block the way; she's not going to let her get to me. Okay?
所以我的女朋友会去拦住她,她会去挡道;她不会让她接近我的。好吧?
She's going to "head her off at the pass", we say -- it's an expression.
她要在过道拦住她,这是一个表达。
Old western movies, you got the cowboys, you got the Indians and the Indians are coming in for attack,
在老西部电影里,有牛仔,有印第安人,印第安人来攻击,
and the cowboys, they head them off at the pass.
牛仔们在山口拦住了他们。
Now, it could also mean to make them change course or make whoever, make something change course.
它还可以指让他们改变方向,或者让任何人改变方向。
Basically means make it change direction. So I'm going this way, somebody came to head me off and make me go this way instead of this way.
意思是让它改变方向。我要往这边走,有人来拦住我,让我往这边走,而不是往这边走。
Okay, easy. "Head for" also means "go" but it's not so much "go",
很简单。“head for”意思也是“去”,但是没那么多去的意思,
it's more about move, move towards something specifically or even aim. Okay?
更多的意思是移动,朝着特定的目标行进或者是指向。
So there's an old expression: "Head for the hills." If there's a flood coming,
有一个古语:“到山上去”。如果洪水来了,
if it's raining very heavily and the water's starting to rise, head for the hills;
如果雨下得很大,水位开始上升,那就往山上去;
go toward the hills that are higher, you can keep your feet dry. Okay?
去更高的山上,你可以让你的脚保持干燥。好吧?
So these are all the different uses of "head" with a preposition.
这些都是“head”与介词的不同用法。
Head north: head up; head down: south; head out: leave or go; head over:
去北边:head up;head down:去南边;head out:离开;head over:
go to a specific spot or place that you spoke with someone about;
去一个你和某人聊到的特定的地方;
head back: go back; head off: stop, block, make change direction; head for a specific place.
head back:回来;head off:停止,阻止,改变方向;去一个特定的地方。
