Phrases. Now, these are all phrases that you would put at the start of a sentence.
接下来,我们来看短语。这些都是大家可以放在句子开头的一些短语。
"Without hesitation, the boy strode into the next door room.
“男孩毫不犹豫地大步走进了隔壁房间。
He opened the door, and he saw", whatever he saw.
他打开门,看到……,我们先不管他看到了什么。
"Without hesitation".
“Without hesitation”(毫不犹豫)。
"From the shadows", when we're going a little bit more slowly.
“From the shadows”(从阴影中),我们走得比较慢的时候。
Sorry. I'll just explain this: "Without", so that means no; "hesitation" means waiting.
抱歉,我来解释一下:“Without”的意思就是没有;“hesitation”的意思就是等待。
So: "Not waiting anymore, the boy decided to go and find out what was out there".
放到一起就是:“不等了,男孩决定去看看那儿到底有什么东西。”
"From the shadows".
“从阴影中”。
So, if we have a light, so there's a light there and I'm here,
如果我们有一盏灯,灯在那边,我在这里,
my shadow is that sort of dark thing that's kind of like a reflection of me.
我的shadow就是那个黑黢黢的,看上去有点像我的倒影的东西。
Anything in the shadows is something unknown; slightly spooky.
黑暗中的任何东西都是未知的;有点诡异的。
"From the shadows, what was happening?"
“阴影里,有什么情况?”
Something unknown.
未知的东西。
We just don't quite know what is behind the door.
我们根本不清楚门后面是什么情况。
"Out of the corner of his eye".
“Out of the corner of his eye”(从他的眼尾)。
So, "Out of the corner of his eye".
从他的眼尾。
So, this is the idea that the boy half-sees something, but he's not quite sure exactly what.
意思就是男孩儿看到了某个东西,但看得不是很真切,不太确定具体是个什么东西。
"All of a suddenly". "All of a sudden". Okay?
“All of a suddenly”(口误)。“All of a sudden”(突然之间)。
"Suddenly", it just means that, but it.
就是“Suddenly”(突然地)的意思,但是……
"All of a sudden", it's just another way of saying: "Suddenly", but with four words instead of one.
“All of a sudden”,只是“突然”的另一种说法,区别就在于它用了四个字而不是一个字。
"In alarm", okay?
接下来是“In alarm”,
This means scared, fear, worried.
意思是害怕、恐惧、担心。
Yup. "In alarm". You know what an alarm clock is?
嗯。“In alarm”,知道闹钟吧?
An alarm, it's like the boy's got an alarm clock going off in his head.
闹钟,就好像男孩的脑子你有个闹钟响了。
Right. Let's work out how to talk about a book that would satisfy the IELTS speaking test, too.
好的,现在我们就来看看如何谈论一本书才能达到雅思口语考试的标准。
Back in a moment.
我们先休息片刻。
Here we have a sample question for talking about a book.
这是一道谈论一本书的样题。
"Speak for 1-2 minutes about a book you have enjoyed reading recently."
“用1-2分钟时间谈谈你最近喜欢读的一本书。”
These are the kinds of things.
这些就是那种(得分点)。
So, these bullet points are what you must include when you're doing one of these speaking tasks.
这些要点就是大家在被问到这类问题时需要插入到自己的回答中的得分点。
"What kind of book is it? What is it about? What sort of people would enjoy it?
“这是一本什么样的书?讲的是哪方面的内容?什么样的人会喜欢看这本书?
And explain why you liked it."
最后就是你喜欢这本书的理由。”
What I've done is I've put up some useful phrases here that you could use if you were talking about a book,
我已经在这边给大家列了一些谈论一本书时比较有用的短语,
and then you could change them slightly if you were talking about a film or television program.
如果你谈论的是电影或电视节目,那稍微变通一下也是可以用的。
"This book is in the genre of..."
“This book is in the genre of...”(这本书的题材是……)
"Genre" means: What type of book is it?
“Genre”的意思是:它是什么类型的书?
So we were, earlier in this lesson, looking at suspense writing.
这节课的前半部分我们讲到了悬疑写作。
So: "This book is in the genre of suspense",
那我们就可以说:“这本书属于悬疑题材”,
but you could have horror, romance, detective, war, childhood; all sorts of different book genres out there.
除了悬疑,还有恐怖,浪漫,侦探,战争,童年等各种各样的题材。
"It's about..."
“It's about...”(讲的是……)
then roughly say what the book is about.
下半句就粗略地说出这本书讲的是哪方面的内容。

打个比方,“这本书讲的是一个女人受够了她的丈夫的故事。”
"The main character is..."
“The main character is...”(这本书的主角是……)
Say something about the main character.
接下来就可以讲点儿跟主角有关的事。
"The main character is called Mary Maloney.
“这本书的主角叫玛丽·马洛尼。
She is a very particular...She is a very careful type of character, but eventually she erupts into violence." Okay?
她是一个非常特别的……她是那种非常谨慎的角色,但最终她还是爆发了,走向了暴力。”
Like a volcano, she erupts.
她爆发了,火山喷发一样地爆发了。
"The plot is as follows..."
“The plot is as follows”(情节如下……)。
"Plot" means what happens in the story.
“plot”指的是故事中发生的事情。
"As follows" means I'm about to tell you what the plot is.
“as follows”意思就是我下面就告诉你情节是怎样的。
"Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh, Duh-duh-duh”. Okay?
“突突突突突突突突突突突突突突突突突突……”懂了吗?
You put in there the story that you are talking about.
把你要讲的故事放进去就可以了。
"Anyone who likes..."
“Anyone who likes....”(任何喜欢……的人)
Well, what type of other sort of book genres might someone who likes this book be interested in?
就是,喜欢这本书的人可能还会对哪种题材的书籍感兴趣。
Are they going to be people who are interested in detective books?
是对侦探类书籍感兴趣的人吗?
Are they going to be people who read biographies?
是喜欢读传记的人吗?
Maybe you can list a particular book that...that you enjoy."...would enjoy this book".
或许,你也可以列举一本你喜欢的书……的人会喜欢这本书。”
"I loved this book because..."
“I loved this book because...”(我喜欢这本书是因为……)
What's...What's the most interesting thing about this book?
这本书……这本书最有趣的地方是什么?
Is it the plot?
是情节吗?
Is it the character?
是角色吗?
Is it where it's set?
是故事发生的地点吗?
Is it the language that is used?
还是故事使用的语言?
I don't know; you'll have to decide that.
我也不知道具体是哪个,你得自己决定。
"The..."
“The...”(小说的……)
Now, what you need to put here is either: "The beginning", "The middle", "The end". Okay?
大家需要补充的可以是:“开始”,“中间”或“结尾”。好吗?
I'm going to talk about a Roald Dahl short story.
我来举个罗尔德·达尔的短篇小说的例子。
"The beginning was particularly...was most, effective because it really made you question: What is going to happen next?"
“小说的开头格外打动人,最打动人,因为你会不禁想问:接下来还会发生什么?”
Okay. So, I hope you've got some useful phrases for talking about a book, there.
好的,希望这节课下来,大家已经掌握了讨论一本书时能用的一些比较有用的短语。
A couple of good suspense stories for you to read:
有几篇比较好的悬疑作品大家可以读一读:
Edgar Allan Poe, The Tell-Tale Heart or the Roald Dahl short story, Lamb to the Slaughter.
埃德加·爱伦·坡的作品《泄密的心》,罗尔德·达尔的短篇小说《羊腿与谋杀》。
Both are excellent.
这两篇写得都很好。
And good luck if any of you are doing your IELTS speaking.
