The Bank of England halved its base rate to a wafer-thin 0.25% and announced a big monetary stimulus: buying £60 billion of British government bonds and £10 billion from selected companies. An unprecedented downgrade slashed its 2017 GDP growth prediction from 2.3% to 0.8%. A recruitment survey said the jobs market was in “freefall”.
